Every 5 years, every passenger elevator in NYC must undergo a Category 5 load test — the elevator is loaded to 125% of capacity and its safety systems checked.
Also annually
Category 1 test — a lighter functional check. Both must be filed with DOB.
Non-compliance
$1,000/violation and the elevator can be taken out of service.
